Personal Philosophy

I'm a retired gay bachelor residing in the City of Palm Springs; a humanist, a feminist, a fiscal conservative, a social liberal and a bicycling enthusiast. Politically not affiliated with a party and my views often approximate those of an Independent Centrist with a committed interest in our environment and other sustainability issues. As for postings on this website: "My opinion is neither copyrighted nor trademarked, and it's price competitive. If you like, I'll trade for one of yours."

“I regard the brain as a computer which will stop working when its components fail. There is no heaven or afterlife for broken down computers; that is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark.” -

"Democracy is supposed to give you the feeling of choice like, Painkiller X and Painkiller Y. But they're both just aspirin."

- "There is only one party in the United States, the Property Party...and it has two right wings: Republican and Democrat. Republicans are a bit stupider, more rigid, more doctrinaire in their laissez-faire capitalism than the Democrats, who are cuter, prettier, a bit more corrupt—until recently... and more willing than the Republicans to make small adjustments when the poor, the black, the anti-imperialists get out of hand. But, essentially, there is no difference between the two parties." - Gore Vidal, 1925-2012

Political Blogging Disclosure

My voter registration is not associated with a political party for my political interests more closely approximate those of an impartial moderate. As I age my views tend to refocus on how social and political issues affect the daily lives of people everywhere. It's among the reasons I advocate Full Human Rights for all. That broad definition is how I describe concerns about the dominance of any group over another. In the political arena I don't see it as healthy for local, state and national governments to be completely dominated by one element or political party. It's for that reason I tend to question the principles behind those who exercise dominance. During election seasons I hope to view all that transpires with an open mind. I'll be monitoring Democratic, GOP and other group's political activities, events and forums in order to benefit from hearing (and seeing) their perspectives. It's part of a personal philosophy I'm trying to observe that dictates I should not spend the years left to me viewing the world with a closed mind.

With respect to the Palm Springs elections, I view them as ones filled with opportunities to learn more about candidates, their campaign platforms and what their election to office may do to foster or change the manner in which the city is governed. As for my own role I hope to ask questions, point out obvious instances where information, candor, facts and transparency are being excluded from community conversations and in the media.

Occasionally some seek to challenge my credibility rather than respond directly to a question, opinion or other view I've published. I seek to be fair, transparent, and only present something as fact when access to supporting documentation is available. But trying to do something and always walking that line is not always successful. Where I fail to be fair, transparent or believed factually in error, it's only right for others to question and it's my obligation to investigate whether I've erred and, if, so make corrections and offer an apology.

My posts on Facebook seek to inform and arouse interest in others by providing information not previously widely known, asking questions not previously considered, and promoting issues of general benefit to all segments of the community. These posts are usually received in the spirit in which they were offered, and for that I'm most appreciative. -- Bond Shands
